What is Karate Conditioning?
Working towards good technique and mastering all of the katas in the syllabus are often the main goals of karate training and rising through the belt ranks. With conditioning, you work on improving your strength, speed, endurance, flexibility, and overall power.
Karate performance, for those who compete, is based on a harmony between karate techniques and physical training, as you need to be both strong and quick while keeping your entire body in shape, as controlled breathing and muscular tension are helpful in both kata performance and sparring.
With younger students, a Sensei will frequently implement basic bodyweight training, such as the standard push-up variants for some upper body strength, leg raises, and sit-ups for some crucial core strength, and perhaps some squats to add some leg exercises.
As students progress, grow, and gain more experience, conditioning training will go beyond simple Karate practices here and there. In addition to Karate, more advanced students supplement their training and conditioning with running, weights, swimming and other strength and cardio exercises.

Is Conditioning only For Experienced Students?
No! Karate conditioning is open to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or degree of fitness. It is a tool to help you improve your Karate abilities as well as your overall health and well-being. You can either add conditioning to your Karate training or just focus on the Karate basics. It’s up to you. Before beginning any new workout regimen, you should however speak with your doctor, especially if you have any underlying medical issues.
The ideal starting point for conditioning training is 2-3 times for beginners. As you gain more strength and endurance, you can gradually increase the frequency of sessions if you wish. Some advanced students practice conditioning training six times a week!
If done correctly and under the supervision of an experienced instructor, karate conditioning is a safe and effective supplementary training program to help improve your body and health. Always remember to warm up before exercising, employ correct form and technique, refrain from overtraining, and stay within your comfort zone. The best thing about conditioning is that you don’t require any equipment, gym, or space to do so. Of course, you can always add in weights, resistance bands or other tools that help enhance your training.
